Last night, over 80 women in advertising attended a Dawn Network Event, hosted at Zenith’s offices on Percy Street.

This was DAWN’s second event of the year as part of the ‘taking control’ series. The session tackled negotiation, and featured a diverse panel of job roles and career experiences. Panellists included Jo Beadell Group Trading Director at Zenith, Emily Philip founder Flex Consulting and mentor with Bloom, Grace Maloney Executive Assistant at AOL and Emma Morris Client Investment Director at Starcom.

Jo Beadell kicked off the session and with 20+ years’ experience in the media industry has a wealth of knowledge in the practicalities of negotiation. Jo’s guidance focused on negotiation as a skill and a muscle that requires training and practise, to be found in and outside the workplace. Day to day life is a negotiation and an opportunity to develop; starting at home with a partner and children, right throughout the working day from interactions with the support team to the CEO.

Emily Philip took the audience through her diverse career path that encompassed managing 40 Spanish teachers despite not being fluent in Spanish, working her way up from reception to become a project manager within the media industry and then setting up her own consultancy business.

Grace Maloney Executive Assistant at AOL, whose role allows her to interact and negotiates with every level and individual within the business. Grace discussed the development of her own personal style which she has honed across a variety of jobs, in various media agencies and working with Jamie Oliver’s organisation.

The final speaker Emma Morris built on the areas introduced by Grace of finding your own voice. With 17 years in the media industry, starting in male dominated ITV sales department before moving to the equally male dominated Mediacom TV buying department, Emma began her career being encouraged to follow the male approach to negotiation as the only example available to her.

The overriding theme from all speakers and throughout the Q&A session was that finding experience and practise is key to effective negotiation. Taking on feedback, placing yourself in challenging situations to develop and fundamentally creating confidence through personal style.
