We helped Three continue its mission to improve mental health conversations in football, but on just 10% of the previous year’s budget. By transforming London black cabs into emotional support spaces with trained drivers and seeding those raw conversations across football culture, we created a powerful, low-cost, high-impact activation that deepened brand love and reached millions.
The Insight
Football has a mental health problem: 2 in 3 British fans struggle but don’t feel comfortable talking about it. As a longstanding Samaritans partner and Chelsea FC sponsor, Three had the credibility to intervene. But heading into 2025, they had only £100K — just 10% of the 2024 budget. Maintaining momentum and cultural impact would require bravery and surgical creativity.
A surprising insight unlocked the idea: half of football fans feel more comfortable opening up to a stranger than someone they know. And 42% had already vented to a cab driver about personal struggles. Taxis aren’t just transport, especially in London! They’re quiet, trusted, private spaces. And there’s a naturally emotional moment baked into the football ritual: the lone journey to the match.
The Approach
We reframed black cabs as mobile therapy rooms. In partnership with Ubiquitous Taxis and Samaritans, we trained cab drivers in emotional support and active listening, which was a UK first. On 3 April 2025, ahead of Chelsea vs Spurs, specially wrapped cabs offered free rides to Stamford Bridge with one rule: you had to #TalkMoreThanFootball. Inside, conversation prompts, mental health signposting and trained drivers made opening up feel natural. The cabs stayed on the streets for a month, making the message unavoidable.
To deepen relevance, Premier League legend Peter Crouch joined fans for filmed ride along conversations (with consent), creating raw, human content that cut through the football ecosystem. A sequential Meta partnership-built intrigue pre match, reinforced the message in-moment and followed up with support resources afterward. What began as a taxi ride became a national dialogue.
The Results
The campaign achieved exceptional results, both in terms of brand impact and cultural significance:

- +13% brand love uplift — a new high among football fans.

- 91% of exposed fans said they were more likely to open up about their mental health.
