We helped Sky transform how it invests around major sports moments by replacing intuition
with intelligence. By building a bespoke data and sentiment engine to predict which weekends
would truly ignite fan passion, we shifted Sky from reactive media buying to a precision model to eliminate wasted spend and maximise subscription impact.

The Insight

Sky’s “Big Weekends” strategy is critical to driving Sky Sports and NOW subscriptions, using high-stakes football and F1 moments as tentpoles throughout the year. But with hundreds of matches and races, decisions about where to invest were historically based on instinct, received wisdom and outdated assumptions. The biggest flaw? Treating all “Big Six” fixtures as equal. This meant budget was often locked into games that looked important, while genuine moments of drama (shock wins, relegation battles, player-driven storylines and the like) were missed. Sky was reacting to conversation after it peaked, rather than leading it.

We stripped away football folklore and analysed years of viewing data alongside real-time social sentiment. Two insights changed everything:

  1. The Big Six aren’t equal. Liverpool and Manchester United consistently drove Tier1 narrative significance, while other clubs often underperformed despite their reputation.
  2. Fans follow heroes as much as clubs. Individual players and storylines generated more sustained attention than club names alone.

The Approach

The conclusion was clear: subscription growth is driven by narrative significance, not fixture status. So, we built The Big Weekend Predictor: an ML-ready tool that interrogates historical viewing, real-time social buzz and narrative context to answer one simple question: how much does this weekend actually matter?

Each weekend was scored and placed into a four-tier investment matrix, linked directly to econometric performance. The model worked so well in football it was rolled out to F1, revealing which races truly drive drama (Brazil, Belgium) and which could be deprioritised. Sky moved from a fixed calendar to a reactive, predictive media model that spots “Newcastle moments” as they happen.

The Results

By replacing intuition with intelligence, the strategy delivered greater efficiency, agility and subscription impact:

  • An always-on planning tool now embedded into Sky’s media operation across football and F1.
  • Higher subscription efficiency by aligning investment with peaks in narrative significance.
  • Faster reaction to fan sentiment – shifting Sky from chasing conversation to leading it.
  • Zero spend on low significance Tier 4 weekends, eliminating waste.
